Energy efficient design and construction of residential buildings

The Pilot Demonstration Project (MRB at 26 Mustafin Str., Karaganda City).

It is one of the pilot construction units built with the assistance of following two UNDP/GEF Projects in 2011 and 2013: «the Elimination of Barriers to the Municipal Heat Supply Energy Efficiency Increase» and «the Energy Efficient Design and Construction of Residential Buildings».

The project goal is to demonstrate an old apartment building complex thermomodernization benefits and advantages.

The construction unit has been included into the Program of modernisation and development of housing and utilities services and entrances, a roof, a facade, a yard and the construction unit’s infrastructure (an electricity system, a water-supply line) have been repaired at the expense of the Program. The apartments' owners are reimbursing financial resources spent on the kinds of repairs to the government by instalments in compliance with the Government Program mechanisms.

In addition, in compliance with the ESCO model the Automated heat unit (АHU) having the-heating-energy-use-meter has been installed in the framework of “the Elimination of Barriers to the Municipal Heat Supply Energy Efficiency Increase” UNDP/GEF Project implementation. A replacement of all windows by energy saving ones with the reduced total thermal resistance Ror =1 м2 C/W has been financed in the framework of “Energy Efficient Design and Construction of Residential Buildings” UNDP/GEF Project implementation at the expense of grant funds (information for comparison: they apply usually parameters at the level of only 0.5-0.6 in Karaganda).

The Results of the Project:

  • A heating energy economy - about 25 % a year (120-130 Gigacalorie).
  • Economy of financial resources - about 80 000 Tenge during a heating period.
  • Greenhouse Gases Emsission Reduction - about 66 tons in CO2 Equivalent.
